You may already be aware that smoking cigarettes causes serious damage to your health.  The most commonly known facts are that smoking causes fatal lung and heart disease.  But are you aware that smoking can also cause non-fatal illnesses related to smoking (American Council on Science & Health 1997) such as: gum disease, angina, Buerger’s Disease (severe circulatory disease), Crohn’s Disease (chronic inflamed bowel), impotence and colon polyps?

Did you know there are over 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke?  At least 600 are believed to be poisonous and 42 to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing). According to the Scientific Committee on Smoking and Health (SCOTH, 1998) the tar content of cigarettes presents a greater health risk than nicotine or carbon monoxide.

Some of the toxic chemicals in tar may surprise you: arsenic, cyanide, formaldehyde (used to preserve organs), ammonia (used in disinfectants), cadmium (the poisonous metal used in batteries), acetone (nail polish remover), benzene (a carcinogenic, industrial solvent used in pesticides), DDT (a notoriously dangerous insecticide).
If a can of fizzy drink containing all that stuff, would you drink 20 cans a day?  If your pet food contained the same amount of chemicals, would you knowingly feed it to your dog?  Frightening when you actually stop and think about it isn’t it?

The fact is, the tobacco companies are clever, by adding cocoa powder and other pleasant tasting substances, they disguise the real taste of the chemicals making them taste more palatable to you.  If you smoke cigarettes, you are being duped.

Most people say they smoke to help them feel calm and relaxed, but smoking is a stimulant NOT a relaxant!
